How to Choose the Right Silicone Sealant for Your Project

Choosing the right silicone sealant is critical for ensuring long-lasting performance in your construction or industrial project. This guide covers the key factors to consider when selecting a silicone sealant.
Understanding Silicone Sealant Types
Silicone sealants come in two main curing types: acetoxy cure and neutral cure. Acetoxy cure sealants (like our GP series) cure quickly and offer excellent adhesion to non-porous surfaces. Neutral cure sealants (like our NP series) are odorless, non-corrosive, and ideal for sensitive substrates.
Key Selection Criteria
1. Substrate Compatibility: Different sealants bond differently to various materials. Glass, aluminum, and ceramics generally work well with most silicone sealants. For porous materials, a neutral cure is often preferred.
2. Movement Accommodation: Consider the expected joint movement. Structural applications typically require ±25% movement capability, while general sealing may only need ±12.5%.
3. Environmental Exposure: For exterior applications, UV resistance and temperature stability are essential. Our NP structural sealant offers resistance from -60°C to +200°C.
4. Curing Conditions: Temperature and humidity affect curing speed. Plan your application schedule accordingly.
Application Tips
- Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust or oil
- Use backing rod for joints deeper than 6mm
- Apply sealant in a continuous bead and tool within skin time
- Allow proper curing before exposing to water or stress
